Details:  The 6th-8th graders will once again have the opportunity to do Service Learning work in different Tahoe locations. This program is an optional extension opportunity that adds a practical application component to what is taught in class by Kathleen.  Kathleen, along with Vanessa Blaikie, will lead projects each week at various locations for 6 weeks during the spring. This spring, students will be collaborating with Keep Tahoe Blue, Take Care Tahoe and the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments. They will be working on beautification, cleaning up heavily littered areas, clearing invasive species as well as creating 3 sustainable art projects for our community to enjoy.

With our newly added art component this semester, students will learn about contemporary artists working in areas of environmental art, land art, social practice and cultural practice (art medium that focuses on engagement through human interaction and social discourse). Depending on the focus of the day, students will work collaboratively on a hands-on art project or installation inspired by artists they just learned about. Projects will range from fugitive land art pieces on the trails, to beautification projects for the senior center, to text based pieces communicating a point of view. The art projects will be fun and engaging, and will invite students to think about the ways in which art can serve as a force for social change.

Your child will be volunteering while also learning the value of advocating for and giving back to their community, building a foundation for years to come. Additionally, by exploring different contemporary artists and creating impactful art pieces, your child will also recognize the power art has in igniting change in a community. The program is for students who truly want to dig into volunteering and also want to better understand the role they have in helping their community grow.
